The Cost of Living in The Riviera Maya

It seems hard to believe you can have a better life and live close to the Caribbean sea for less money than you pay now. Life in the Riviera Maya costs less, of course, this depends on your lifestyle, but you will receive more for your buck here in Mexico.

You will afford some of the luxuries you may not be able to afford in the rest of North America. For example, two people living on $2000 USD a month can afford to rent a beautiful condominium near the beach, with all the amenities you dream of, including a swimming pool, fitness center, and even a cleaning service. Life is good in Mexico.

Considering the average Canadian or American´s monthly basic pension, Mexico may be a very comfortable retirement option, offering a better standard of living.

The price of utilities is reasonable, including internet service for about $22 USD and Cable TV packages from $35 USD.

The cost of electricity is minimal unless you are not conscious of your usage. You may experience bill shock if you run the air conditioner continuously.

If you prefer to invest in Mexican real estate, this area is still affordable and provides greater value than a home in Canada or the US with lower taxes and condo fees if applicable. As Canadians and Americans are being priced out of the real estate market back home, Mexico offers an affordable opportunity to be a homeowner.

The Riviera Maya may not be the cheapest area of Mexico but compared to other Mexican resort towns it is still accessible and offers great investment potential.

Mexico continues its steady growth in real estate with no signs of slowing down.

Property taxes in the US and Canada continue to increase, but here in Mexico, we enjoy very low property taxes with an average of about $100 USD a year depending on the size and location of the property.

The HOA (Homeowners Association) fees are surprisingly low as well, averaging between $100 to $200 depending on the property, the more luxurious your development is, the higher the fee will be, but on average very affordable.

Quality healthcare and dental care is typically half the price of the US, in fact, Mexico is one of the top medical tourism countries in the world due to the low cost and the quality of care available.

Transportation is very inexpensive; many taxi trips will cost $35 pesos compared to cities like Vancouver where the meter starts at $3.20 CAD and cost about $15 CAD for a five-minute trip. Getting around town in the Riviera Maya is inexpensive and very easy, 5 pesos on a bus or collectivo for most destinations.

It is easy to save money and live on a budget; you will want to shop where the locals shop. By avoiding the tourist areas, you will find the best quality and price for groceries, services, and other necessities.
